1999 Monterey Historics at Laguna Seca

Some pictures of the 1999 Monterey Historics.

These pictures were taken with my digital camera, so they are pretty crappy. But the camera is small and I can put the images up with no effort. More tomorrow night.

Auto Union v16 "Mountain Climber"

Was driven today by Audi Chairmain Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen who briefly tried to impede Micheal Alboreto, driving the RS8. Alboreto seemed to hesitate in passing his boss as the cars neared the Audi stand. But to the wild applause of the Audi- fanatic crowd, as well as most of upper management, Alboreto finally let loose right in front of the stands and passed Dr. Paefgen. Dr. Paefgen smiled broadly and waved.

I took a great picture of the two cars pulling away. It's in the 'real' camera.

Auto Union v12

There is a great story about these cars. Apparently, after WWII, they were found by the Russians in a cave and taken back to Russia. For thirty some-odd years, no own knew where they were. Finally, after the communism, they trickled out of Russia in bits and pieces. They were re-assembled by Audi and brought to Laguna Seca. There are only eight of these pre-war, mid-engined, designed-by-Ferdinand Porsche, Auto Union race cars still left. Five of them are at the Monterey Historics and RACING!!!

More photos, no commentary. Sorry, maybe latter.

A look at the inside. Tim is an amazing metalworker. His specialty is restoring Porsche 356's. He does bodywork and hand pounds metal sheets into fenders and other amazingly complex shapes...
